Mikael Karlsson specializes in dramatic music (modern dance, contemporary ballet, opera and theater) but also writes for orchestras, chamber ensembles, choirs, and art installations.
His music has been performed at Carnegie Hall, Paris Opera, Le Poisson Rouge, Vienna State Opera, Lincoln Center, Semperoper Dresden, MoMA, Oslo Opera House, the Royal Swedish Opera, the Ecstatic Music Festival and the PROTOTYPE festival.
In 2023, his opera “Melancholia” , adapted from the Lars von Trier film with a libretto by Royce Vavrek, premiered at the Royal Swedish Opera. Royce and Mikael just premiered “Fanny and Alexander” (based on the Ingmar Bergman film, now directed by Ivo van Hove) at the La Monnaie Opera House in Brussels in 2024. Both operas have received glowing reviews and sold out all performances.
He is developing an opera adaptation of Lluïsa Cunillé’s “Barcelona – Map of Shadows” with director and librettist Mallory Catlett for Mabou Mines in NYC.
His pieces with celebrated choreographer Alexander Ekman have premiered at Royal Swedish Opera (Eskapist, 2019 and 2022, Midsummer Night’s Dream, 2015), the Oslo Opera (A Swan Lake, 2014), the Semperoper (COW, 2016), the Paris Opera Ballet (Play, 2017, 2021 and 2024) and the Gothenburg Opera (Hammer, 2022). Their pieces are frequently performed in major opera houses across the world.
