From the bottomless pits of Detroit urban sprawl, there have been few post-punk groups that smoothly implement both sporadic pop structures and noisy polyrhythmic themes without careening into self-destructive and untraceable obscurity.
Facing the dissolution of Pulp Culture in 2015, Alex Brown and Andrew Zerbo introduced the idea of a streamlined indie rock group to Andy Scott. The trio sifted through a list of over 3,000 names before falling back on Zerbo's sputtering and senselessly hilarious false plural. Relying on minimalist part-writing and dynamic effects, the original concept for Mooses was simpler than its influences allowed. Citing inspiration from groups such as Sonic Youth and Talking Heads, as well as video game soundtracks by Koji Kondo and Takashi Tatseishi, Andy and Alex took their initial compositions further outside their originally intended commercial restraint, resulting in a more artistic direction and an experimental sound characterized by the imposition of odd time signatures and dynamic instrumentation, contrasting passionate vocal parts with assertively catchy bass melodies, aided by the adept harmonies of Rob Louis.
After playing a run of shows around Detroit the group recorded and produced their first singles, Mooses first releasing Meeses EP, followed by Mouses EP in 2019.
After sequestering and regrouping with percussionist, J. Durrell Gibbs, the band now looks forward to their seminal, self-titled LP in November of 2024.
