Moritz Fasbender

Moritz Fasbender is one of the numerous alter egos of composer and musician Friederike Bernhardt. The pianist’s fascination or the obscure clearly informs her phantasmagorical compositions, the music strays from the conventional – it bends the rules of contemporary classical music or neo-classical and, as far as genres go, she’s a bit of a black sheep.
Moritz marries her classical background and grand piano to reverb effects and field recordings, but the end result isn't a homogenous mixture of the two, rather it’s a radical collage of raw sounds creating an intertwined musical landscape of extraordinary beauty.
Her latest body of work conjures images from our collective unconscious and could easily underscore a David Lynch or Roy Anderson film. A sound world that’s riddled with hypnotic experiments in pattern and repetition. Like recurring thoughts and dreams the motifs and melodies return but each time wrapped in new and unpredictable but also humorous settings. Everything is coarsely glued together in a photomontage that avoids a clear structure, but is teeming with a huge range of emotions. Just like images from the unconscious mind, it’s able to carry moods and feelings that are intense without ever having to be explicit.
