Norwegian pop witch Moyka grew up in the forest, Hallingdal Valley, an area shrouded in myth and folklore. Here she nursed the dream that she’d one day be creating music. She wrote her first song at just ten, inspired by the loss of a friend who was moving away, and the theme of saying goodbye.
Enrolling a music production degree in Bergen, Moyka “dived into the synth world”. She immersed herself in the electronic landscapes of <a href="spotify:artist:5nPOO9iTcrs9k6yFffPxjH" data-name="Röyksopp">Röyksopp</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:4Ge8xMJNwt6EEXOzVXju9a" data-name="Caroline Polachek">Caroline Polachek</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:25uiPmTg16RbhZWAqwLBy5" data-name="Charli XCX">Charli XCX</a>; <a href="spotify:artist:6UE7nl9mha6s8z0wFQFIZ2" data-name="Robyn">Robyn</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:2RqrWplViWHSGLzlhmDcbt" data-name="Yaeji">Yaeji</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:3kZdsaTYgaaolNxpnJ4iDe" data-name="Son Lux">Son Lux</a>. Working with Cubase, soft synths, and samples, she learned how to create “my own, mystical, synth-driven universe”.
PopJustice named her one of the best popstars operating in the world today and called her EP Spaces a masterpiece.
She started out playing at several showcases, including by:Larm and Trondheim Calling (NO), The Great Escape First Fifty and JaJaJa (UK), Eurosonic (NL), Linecheck (IT) and Reeperbahn (GER). In her first year she played Norway’s biggest festival, Øyafestivalen, a gig that got rave reviews from Norwegian press. The same year she played support for <a href="spotify:artist:4TrraAsitQKl821DQY42cZ" data-name="Sigrid">Sigrid</a>, a tour which ended with a soldout 3Arena in Dublin.
She was nominated for the Anchor Award at Reeperbahn Festival 2019, and then chosen as Amazon Music’s Weekly One. Later they named Moyka One To Watch 2022.
For anyone who wants to know who she is, it’s all there in the songs – mythical synths, but accessible too. “I want to create a mystical universe,” she affirms, “where people can feel at home.”
