Magnús Thorlacius' solo project, Myrkvi, started in 2020 and swiftly gained traction in the Icelandic indie scene. The debut single reached 2nd place on the national radio chart, and a well-received album soon followed. Magnús' career began a few years earlier, when he won the Icelandic Battle of the Bands with Vio, also earning him the Best Singer award. They went on to release two successful records and receive a couple of nominations at the national music awards.
Myrkvi's sophomore album, released in 2023, represents something of a mixture between the two projects. It was originally intended for Vio and for the most part evolved as such, with the songs Blindfolded and Beaches even fully completed. However, after years of hiatus, Magnús and Yngvi Holm got the other band members' blessing to finish the album on their own and release it under the Myrkvi moniker. In following up on the album, Myrkvi garnered praise for its live performances, which included appearances at prominent festivals such as SXSW.
In 2025, Myrkvi released the album Rykfall, which means "gathering dust"—a highly personal and ambitious album that was years in the making, with nearly every detail orchestrated or performed by Magnús. It tells of his journey in pursuing a dream. The album cover features Myrkvi's little helper, Stebbi the cat.
