Vio was formed by Magnús Örn Thorlacius and his two childhood friends, Kári Guðmundsson and Páll Cecil Sævarsson. A few weeks later they won the 2014 Icelandic Battle of The Bands (Músíktilraunir), with Magnús also scooping the best singer award. Their debut single You Lost It became a national hit and they were nominated as Newcomer of the Year at the Icelandic Music Awards.
The fourth townsman from Mosfellsbær, Yngvi Rafn Garðarsson Holm, joined the band before they recorded their debut album. It became nominated as Rock Album of the Year 2015 and included two of the most popular songs on the radio, Liðnar árstíðir and Perfect Boys. Vio released an EP in 2017 including Alright, their biggest international hit. A few years later, Kári and Páll left the band, leaving it as a duo.
