Born into the Wôpanâak tribe, People of the First Light, Nanauwe was raised on her ancestral island Nôepe. Her first songs were written in the forest of Aquinnah, where she lived with her family in a tipi. Surrounded by music, she would ride around in her dads gold truck listening to old soul CDs. Her sisters and aunties all have the most beautiful voices and they sing when they come together. Nanauwe and her family went to tribal gatherings and powwows where she would see her people drumming, singing, and dancing their traditions. Music naturally flowed into Nanauwe through her experiences, and it became part of her. Her purpose is to pass on that love and connection to the next generation through her songwriting, singing, rapping and producing. Taking the people on a journey with her music, bringing inspiration all over the world, Nanauwe is bringing back a piece of indigenous culture.
