Necessary Response, the short-lived side project of <a href="spotify:artist:1Jgp0YCPHCJx5XD7nlfGVN" data-name="Aesthetic Perfection">Aesthetic Perfection</a>'s Daniel Graves, existed for a blink of an eye at the end of the 2000's. Its sole LP, "Blood Spills Not Far from the Wound", was comprised of tracks deemed "too pop" for Aesthetic Perfection's 2005 debut "Close to Human". At the request of his then-label, Graves reluctantly formed a side project so that his songs could see the light of day.
Christening himself Necessary Response (a synonym of fellow LA artist <a href="spotify:artist:7vwmOoJ4uuLnacO4jxbTWB" data-name="Imperative Reaction">Imperative Reaction</a>), Graves issued his one and only album on his 24th birthday, March 16th, 2007. However, after poor album sales, lukewarm press, and a forgettable North American tour in 2008, Graves ended the project almost as quickly as it began.
Over the years, however, the album developed a cult-following, and Graves was repeatedly urged to resurrect the project (despite incorporating much of the synthpop sound into later Aesthetic Perfection releases). In order to both quell the demand and to fold the music of Necessary Response into the Aesthetic Perfection discography (where it was always meant to be), Graves re-recorded and reissued "Blood Spills..." as Aesthetic Perfection in 2015.
One might think that would've been enough to put the issue to rest, but the demand for more Necessary Response endures (with many fans of the original disavowing the 2015 redux). Despite Graves' best efforts, Necessary Response remains a curious and alluring part of dark music history.
