Neon Witch is a Darkwave / Indie Electronic duo based in Detroit, Michigan.
The Detroit department store giant, Hudson’s, was once celebrated as the “Macy’s of the Midwest” until its decline and eventual bankruptcy decades ago, leaving behind a boneyard of blighted warehouses. One such warehouse, on the corner of Fort St. and Rosa Parks Blvd, was recently discovered to be a safe house for the storage of stolen vehicles by a local Detroit carjacking ring. Even more recently, a portion of its fifth floor was repurposed as a makeshift studio for recording Neon Witch’s debut EP album, Mirror of the Night. For an album that explores the concept of acceptance in the face of loss, alienation, and meaninglessness it seems fitting to have been recorded in one of Detroit’s many industrial catacombs that serve as scattered memorials to a once prominent past.
After having already decided on the name Neon Witch for their project, it was later confirmed through ancestral research that the band’s lead vocalist was, in fact, a direct legal descendant of a farmer who was prosecuted for witchcraft and executed by the state in 1692 Salem, Massachusetts. For the band, this eerie discovery cast a strange new light and further solidified their decision to name the project Neon Witch.
