He was awarded first prize at the 1992 Dublin Film Festival's music score competition, chaired by composer Michael Nyman. Since then has composed music for feature films and many critically acclaimed and award-winning British television drama series. Notable recent scores include the drama series 'White House Farm' (ITV/ Netflix), the BAFTA-nominated drama series 'A Confession' starring Martin Freeman (ITV/ Netflix), and ‘The Reckoning’, the BAFTA-nominated BBC drama series about Jimmy Savile starring Steve Coogan .
Niall has received 5 IFTA (Irish Film and Television Award) nominations and won the award in 2013 for his orchestral score to the BBC film 'Loving Miss Hatto'. In 2017 he received the Venus award at the Badalona Film Festival in Barcelona. In 2019 Niall signed with publisher Faber Music in London.
Niall has released three solo piano albums. Two of these, 'The Promenade' and 'Still Life', were released by the contemporary classical label '1631 Recordings'. His third piano album 'Nightsongs' was released independently.
