Known for his improvisational, emotional and raw pieces, queer-composer Nick Jamkhou was featured on the Spotify Editorial Playlist: The Magnificent Piano only a week after his first album “Ornaments” debuted in January 2020, and has since grown an international following.
Born and raised in Toronto with his parents and older brother, Nick took to the piano at 6 years old after his brother had stopped his lessons and left their piano abandoned.
At the age of 10, Nick stopped his formal training and instead experimented on his own, writing his first compositions.
In his last year of high school, after teaching himself to play the saxophone and learning the violin in school, he wrote two pieces (one for jazz ensemble and one for orchestra) which he conducted and performed at his school’s year-end concert. His re-composition of the Canadian National Anthem became the school’s official anthem in 2014. His work has also been featured in numerous Canadian short films.
Now, working in the banking industry after having graduated with Chemistry Honours, he continues to write music on his down time.
Nick on his debut album: “Ornaments” explores the prevalence of surface level connections we experience daily, and how romance has mostly dissolved, replaced by decorative relationships in which people are treated as ornaments. It’s a diary of my life; through music.
