Oddland was founded in 2003 in Turku, Finland. Two decades later three of the four founding members still remain in the band and the current lineup has been the same since 2009. A string of early demos and EP's led to the band winning a competition by Century Media Records, landing them a record deal which resulted in the debut album The Treachery Of Senses. The debut album stirred a lot of interest and acclaim in the scene, being hailed as ”the greatest progressive metal album ever from Finland”. The band has stated that the debut was ”the first steps of coming into the sound of Oddland”. The release was followed by festival shows, support shows for more established acts (Leprous, Pain of Salvation, Soen) and a mini-tour in Europe.
In 2016 Oddland's sophomore album Origin featured a heavier, lower-tuned sound leaning into a djentier soundscape. The writing process for the album was ”very burdensome, bringing the band to the brink of breaking up”. 'Origin' was followed by more extensive touring featuring two European tours in 2017 and 2018 supporting Persefone. The third album Vermilion (2022) was the result of a complete re-imagining of the way the band composes and produces music, bringing a conflictual way of interacting to a halt. The band has expressed that this is the first time the end result fully met their original vision. Release of 'Vermilion' was followed by a European tour and festival shows.
