Change has been something of a constant for Overgrow since its earliest days. After a trio of EPs and an extensive touring schedule, 2021 saw the Columbus-born solo project of vocalist Jake Ciccotelli transform into a Chicago-based band of four equal members. After finishing recording their debut LP Walls of Mirrors and relocating across the midwest, life seemed to start settling down - until the health of Ciccotelli’s fiancee started to take a turn for the worst.
Soon after the release of Walls of Mirrors, a battle with an unknown autoimmune disease found Ciccotelli’s partner repeatedly rushed to the emergency room with alarming regularity. Suddenly, plans for a busy year for the band turned into a time to be there for and take care of family. Thankfully, a summer of fear and uncertainty passed and her health started to stabilize, but thoughts of what could be around the corner were all-consuming.
Ciccotelli - alongside guitarist Alex Miller, as well as new drummer Trevor Hancock and bassist Pat Smith - regrouped and utilized those fears as fuel to work on new material. What has come from this period is a collection of songs showcasing the band at a new creative peak and with a renewed sense of focus - a reinvigorated version of Overgrow that recalls the strengths of each iteration before it, all while pushing forward to what’s next.
