Pet Panther is the brainchild of American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, Al Shalom. The Brooklyn based artist grew up looking to move beyond the conventional household he grew up in. Al has been writing music from a young age, however his writing got serious while in college. Pet Panther’s sound can be described as folk pop-electronic however, it is distinctly unique. They draw influences from artists such as Fleet Foxes, Blood Orange, and MGMT, but also from classic rock and new wave acts of the 70’s and 80’s. “Although I grew up in a pretty conservative home, I was exposed to my dad’s love for classic rock, and my mom’s for new wave. I used to sneak some of their CDs out of the stereo closet and play them on my shitty Walkman in bed. I think the songwriting styles of Bruce, and Cat Stevens, along with the experimental electronic sounds of The Cure and Talking Heads were a major influence on me as a songwriter today” In 2013, after graduating college with a finance major, he was offered a job at a prestigious investment bank. However, his urge to pursue a career in music led him to turn down that job and focusing on his passion. Immediately after graduation, Al got to work, honing in on his sound and creating what is today known as Pet Panther.
