Swedish post-punk outfit Pharmacist was formed in Gothenburg in 2017 and consists of the siblings Moa Dannefjord (vocals, guitar) and Julian Dannefjord (drums), Gustaf Grönlund (bass) and Olle Oscarsson (guitar). In January 2018, the band presented themselves to the world with the EP Renaissance, turning heads with noisy, melodic, and energetic pop songs. They were praised on national television by legendary music journalist Per Sinding-Larsen as one of the most promising young indie bands in Gothenburg, and their EP was released on limited vinyl by Malmö's Rundgång Rekords.
The band eventually grew disillusioned by the limitations of a perceived but largely misguided association with the “Gothenburg sound” and partly relocated to Malmö, where they found a more genre-fluid and open-minded artistic environment. Their sound became more experimental and bass-driven, giving space for Moa’s complex, often metaphorical lyrics as well as her charismatic and uncompromising Patti Smith-esque stage persona. Known as an intense, energetic and emotional live act, the band draws on a wide set of influences, of which some of the more obvious include groups such as The Fall, The Birthday Party and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Yet, Pharmacist's sound remains profoundly their own, carried by the charisma and musical characteristics of each individual member. New material is currently in the works.
