Philipp Fabian Kölmel was born 1973 in Rastatt/Germany but grew up in Berlin. He began improvising on piano in his childhood. He took part in the composition competitions at an early age and won several awards. He also played in big bands, orchestras and jazz ensembles, in part with his own works. Later he studied sound engineering, piano, voice, double bass and conducting at the Berlin University of the Arts and film scoring with Enjott Schneider at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich.

He began working as a freelance composer for movies, commercials, events and theater projects in 1996. Pianist and songwriter for theater and cabaret stages. Kölmel obtained many composition commissions for international events. Thus, for example, he created for the 150th anniversary of Siemens a live surround concert for five grand pianos; for Giesecke & Devrient a symphony for full orchestra and rock band, for the Hamburg-Mannheimer insurance company a pop symphony with elements from Beethoven's "Ode to Joy".

He made his feature film debut with the orchestral film score for Cascadeur (1998). One of his scoring assignments Rubinrot - Ruby Red (2013), Saphirblau - Sapphire Blue (2014) and Smaragdgrün - Emerald Green (2016) is causing more interest amongst collectors and critics alike (Sony Classical).

Kölmel is a member of the German Film Academy, the German Composers Association, founding member and leadership committee member of the German Film Music Society.
