Building on a musical partnership forged as members of LA thrash upstarts Anti-Hero, guitarist/singer Calvin Adrian and drummer Ben Richardson (Fortress, Wild Eyes) founded Poisoned Chalice with a vision firmly rooted in classic heavy metal. Though their influences were be familiar – Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Van Halen – the pair committed to combining pounding drums, rousing riffs, and nimble solos with creative, intentional songwriting and lyrics that aspired to more than just babes, bikes, and barbarians (all of which, to be fair, are awesome!)
On their self-titled debut EP, the duo – joined by bass wizard Menno Verbaten (Lightning Swords of Death, Cryptic Slaughter, Behold! the Monolith) – show the full range of their powers. Opener “Death’s Right Hand” is a riff-heavy horror story; “Poisoned Chalice,” a rueful tale of love gone wrong. The sleazy shuffle of “Wasting Away” belies its deeply personal ennui, and album closer “Sculpted Angels” is a defiant, doomed-out political lament.
