More visionary than your common ambient techno producer, Sandro Perri synthesizes real instruments with dark ambience and comlements the resulting music with suitable rhetoric and visual art on his sensory rich productions as Polmo Polpo. The Toronto producer and one-time jazz student debuted as Polmo Polpo in 1999 on a split 12" alongside Cog. He released the record on his own Audi Sensa label and limited the pressing to only 100 copies. After a brief stint collaborating with the late Todd Fox as Dot Wiggin, Perri returned as Polmo Polpo in January 2001 with Acqua/Oarca and then again in March 2002 with Riva/Rottura, again limiting both 12" EPs to small pressings. Later that same year, he compiled these four tracks, several ambient interludes, and some accompanying visual and rhetorical elements as The Science of Breathing, a full-length album released by Alien8 Recordings sublabel Substractif. ~ Jason Birchmeier, Rovi
