If you've stumbled into a Toronto venue you've probably experienced Poster Boy; the live and provocative artist known widely for their highly inspirational performance art.
In the beginning, post-punk was on the rise while bands like <a href="spotify:artist:58XGUNsRNu3cVOIOYk5chx" data-name="Ty Segall">Ty Segall</a> were adding their brand of tape echos and <a href="spotify:album:5P0LN9xrnLY1By7mlkKtkx" data-name="Melted">Melted</a> monotron delays to the scene. In Toronto, it got even weirder; our pavement walls failed to contain noise pop like <a href="spotify:artist:4ibBSVAyiMRLlkuAGpwxIG" data-name="THIGHS">THIGHS</a> or the hot footed electronica of <a href="spotify:artist:1YAv2yohpdjlPVbtqZCGLY" data-name="Doldrums">Doldrums</a>.
It was actually members of HSY and <a href="spotify:artist:33qVw2pK7R3Io2tMPNOIf0" data-name="Odonis Odonis">Odonis Odonis</a> that first met Britney (fka <a href="spotify:artist:3TnNYEMz7WxVEIJzAmg1LG" data-name="Kenton Smith">Kenton Smith</a>) and found their way to their first demos. And if 'The Garage' wasn't getting shut down, they probably would have played there, but even after the collapse, <a href="spotify:artist:1vT2Of4mykciutn34xyOrg" data-name="HSY">HSY</a>'s Jude encouraged them to "get it together" by listing them on a show poster without their prior consent.
With nowhere to turn, Poster Boy was created much like many other local bands that didn’t last; out of their best friends at the time. After a few more years and a few more gigs at a few more badly named venues, Poster Boy finally fell apart.
But the noise didn't stop;
after many tapes and tours, they continued solo performances for years
with many of the heaviest hitters in the game including <a href="spotify:artist:2O4VC4VQIud5ReioNFQXJj" data-name="The Beverleys">The Beverleys</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:3F44NFkOhpksx7b2JXMo3G" data-name="Weaves">Weaves</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:75mafsNqNE1WSEVxIKuY5C" data-name="IDLES">IDLES</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:5jh7sgXW2njALiIh0aPXjB" data-name="Show Me the Body">Show Me the Body</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:2EcltAQF7JHjEk9Thd9Pui" data-name="Dreamcrusher">Dreamcrusher</a> just to name a few.
2020's 'empty' was their most played yet, gaining traction with a new sound; robust maximalism and a common theme; to not only survive, but transition into someone new.
