Despite being a self-proclaimed technical novice, his intuitive direction and taste-making have redefined his craft and pushed the boundaries of the lofi genre. The complexities of sample clearing ultimately lead him to seeking original 'samples’, sending him as far as the vinyl markets of São Paulo, marking a transition from sampling artist to pioneering producer.
His latest project, From Scratch — a collaboration with Rotterdam-based jazz pianist ALEXANDER— emerges as a testament to his evolution, encapsulating his journey from sampling vinyl to orchestrating original music. The push of sample-based intuition against the pull of theory-based technical prowess did more than just reveal new musical landscapes, it rekindled Psalm Trees’ passion for production.
Now, he views himself more as a 'collage artist' than a producer, assembling diverse musical elements into a cohesive whole. Embracing this identity has cracked his creative world wide open, inviting and revealing new, innovative ways to express himself and collaborate beyond standard lofi beat-making.
