It would not be unreasonable to assume that a certain rock-band formula—four dudes, two guitars, one bass, and a drum kit—has run its course. That is, until you hear Pucusana, a New Orleans four-piece band that wrings from old sounds and styles a fresh new approach to rock.
Led by singer-guitarist Sergio Rodriguez, Pucusana has been gigging regularly around New Orleans for over two years, and have established a reputation as a hard-working (and hard-playing) group. Their signature, beachy sound is born from the music Rodriguez heard growing up in Peru—the band is actually named after a beach in Lima.
Pucusana’s songs are simple but sophisticated, direct but oblique, melancholy but exuberant. The depth and multiplicity of the tunes comes from the interaction between Rodriguez’s subtle lyrics, his off-the-cuff delivery, and the unconventional chords’ dynamic moods. Pucusana records (which can be found wherever music is streamed, as well as at pucusanaband.com) are carefully crafted and arranged without being fussy, but, when played live, are often liable to explode.Pucusana’s latest record, Mood Swings, was released in February of this year, and the band is already hard at work writing new material. If you can catch one of their shows around New Orleans, or on their upcoming summer tour, bring a friend, a drink, and your dancing shoes.
