Rare Silk, an American vocal jazz group active during the 1980s, emerged as a promising force in the jazz world with their innovative harmonies and eclectic repertoire. Formed by sisters Gaile and Marylynn Gillaspie, alongside Marguerite Juenemann in Boulder, Colorado, the group initially drew inspiration from swing-era ensembles like The Andrews Sisters. Their big break came in 1980 when they opened for Benny Goodman at the Playboy Jazz Festival, leading to high-profile performances and the inclusion of male vocalist Todd Buffa, which modernized their sound with contemporary jazz influences. Their 1983 debut album, New Weave , featuring contributions from Michael and Randy Brecker, reached #2 on Billboard’s Jazz Albums chart and earned Grammy nominations.
