Wilson initially studied law and art at the University of New South Wales.[3] She completed her acting training at The Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) and later continued her training with the US theatre company The Second City on a scholarship.[4] She then performed with the Sydney Theatre Company and at the Melbourne Comedy Festival.[4]
Wilson first became known in Australia for her role as Toula in five seasons of the television series Pizza. She later appeared in various television shows, including the comedy show The Wedge from 2006 to 2007. After a brief role as Kristen Wiig's roommate in the comedy Bridesmaids (2011), she received her first offers for larger roles in US productions. In 2012, she appeared in Best Friend's Wedding, Small Apartments, What to Expect When You're Expecting, and Pitch Perfect.
