Originally known as Ocean Roots, the band formed in Warwick, Rhode Island in early 2013. A year later they were forced to change their name when a group in Texas who went by the same name (and owned the copyright for it) got their lawyers to send scary letters. Thus, the Rival Roots were born.
The band has been performing their blend of reggae, rock, and ska ever since. The current lineup has been together since 2020 and consists of Justin Leclerc (vocals/trombone/keys), Tom Lupo (lead guitar), Joe Margres (rhythm guitar/vocals/trumpet), Jon Waldstein (bass), and Chris Netro (drums).
They’ve enjoyed sharing the stage with a diverse group of bands such as Ballyhoo!, Crooked Coast, Dubbest, The Slackers, The Toasters, Joe Samba, Dudemanbro, TJ & The Campers, Concrete Beach, The Copacetics, Sweet Babylon, and many more.
