Ronnie Hudson is most well-known for the classic 1982 funk single \"West Coast Pop Lock.\" Originally from D.C., the bassist performed with Chuck Brown before he relocated to Memphis, where he recorded with Isaac Hayes, Luther Ingram, and Rufus Thomas. After hitting San Francisco and L.A., Hudson went solo with \"West Coast Pop Lock.\" Based on Zapp's \"So Ruff, So Tuff,\" the single was kick-started by L.A. station KDAY. By the end of the '80s, it had been sampled and/or referenced several times over. 2Pac and Dr. Dre's \"California Love,\" a smash 1996 single featuring Zapp's Roger Troutman, made the song more popular than ever. Hudson continued to perform, and in 2014 released Westcoastin', with appearances from many West Coast rap figures.
