Accomplished jazz musician and sessionman Sam Levine grew up in the Midwest in the 1950s and later attended Harvard College, the University of Alaska, and Indiana University, where he obtained a degree in applied music, music history, and theory. After moving to Nashville in the mid-'70s, Levine quickly made a name for himself as a versatile (saxophone, flute, clarinet, and even penny whistle) session musician and sideman for the likes of Amy Grant, Wynonna, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Vince Gill, Mel Tormé, Al Jarreau, Reba McEntire, and many more. As a bandleader of traditional and contemporary jazz, Celtic, and Dixieland bands, his professional activities also included wedding and business receptions, as well as recording sessions. In the early '90s he began releasing his own material, mostly instrumental music collections in a smooth jazz style, but also praise & worship music. In the new millennium Levine found a new niche for his output thanks to the growing demand for soothing instrumental music on streaming platforms, which neared almost 40 albums in 2024, not counting compilation appearances. ~ Mariano Prunes, Rovi
