Sangeeta rose to fame in the early 1990s with her unique music which combined soft bhangra beats with Hindi lyrics.

Her catchy melodies and lush string arrangements created a platform for a new sentiment - expressing a woman’s voice in a male-dominated Bhangra scene.

Born in Luton, England, Sangeeta showed a passion for singing in her early years. Perhaps written in destiny (her name meaning music in Hindi), she was presented an award by singing superstar Lata Mangeshkar at the BBC Radio Asian Song Contest in 1979.

Sangeeta signed a deal with Kuljit Bhamra's label Keda Productions in 1989 and her first album A Breath of Fresh Bhangra Air was released on vinyl and cassette. The album was received well, but struggled to make a mark in the burgeoning male-dominated bhangra scene - a time when it was unheard of for a woman to sing bhangra songs. After a television appearance on BBC Network East in 1992, her song Pyar Ka Hai Bari shot to number one positions in both Bhangra and Bollywood charts at the same time, even though it was sung in Hindi.

During the following years, Sangeeta produced more albums and toured nationally (as well as in the Netherlands and East Africa) performing to thousands of people. She has been awarded two Gold Discs for record sales for her albums Flower in the Wind and Arrows of Love, both of which have become reminiscent and nostalgic soundtracks to life in the 1990s for many British Indians.
