The new wave of British Freakbeat from North Staffordshire, England. Fusing the sounds of the 1960s, Sawel Underground are burgeoning in the retro-rock revival with their gritty, hypnotic sound, mirroring the escapism & abandon felt in Northern and Midland Britain.
Influenced by the counter-culture of the 60s, their take on the modern psych renaissance is dosed with tripping intensity & dream-like giddiness. Santa Rosa Records described their debut single Wild Thing, as "introducing (Sawel) to the creative demigods of vintage sound and the mind-bending textures of the 60s. The avant-garde music video exhibits their eccentric fashion, furthering their exploration into the ocean of artistic thought".
HSDS I, 2021, saw their first radio play from the BBC, with Indie-Tapes.com commenting "the infectious guitar riffs and strong vocals are amazing and I adore the lo-fi elements in the mix. A fresh, energetic, well-produced record".
After playing at Your City & Better World festivals, the latter half of '21 was spent touring major cities in England, before cementing the new 6-piece lineup that would record both sides of their forthcoming debut 7". With Pass On By described as 'Diddly-esque Freakbeat', ModsOfYourGeneration.com announced "a new British Invasion revival is on the horizon, the front runners are from North Staffs! Absolutely blown away by them", the other side of the record being a collaboration with one of Britain's earliest charting R&B artists, <a href="spotify:artist:0wPdF6oU9sRm16BNvWfyRR" data-name="Dave Berry">Dave Berry</a>.
