Scarlett J releases her debut single “Mother Tongue” via Somewhere Records. Mother Tongue is dark and almost foreboding in its listen, with Scarlett’s haunting vocal reminiscent of a call or cry for warning. Inspired by the works of Virginia Woolf, Scarlett J writes from a perspective of reflection, exploring a past relationship and the toxicities surrounding it.
Based in Leicestershire, Scarlett J has been songwriting from an early age, and explains her songwriting is “almost an ode to grief”. Exploring life’s darker moments, Mother Tongue is reminiscent of her influences; Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes, Ethel Cain and Phoebe Bridgers with minimal arrangements yet full of tension and purpose.
Scarlett J has joined the record label and artist led community Somewhere Records, based in Market Harborough for her current and future releases.
