Located in the Washington D.C. area, alternative pop act, Schmidt, is manned by Josh Schmidt, who occasionally enlists the help of friends Rob Dessimoz (Strange Cut) and Nathan Burns (Neatly Drawn Blinds) to add extra instrumentation.
Schmidt’s musical background dates back to the early 2000s when he played in the rock band A Life Among Ghosts. He took a few-year hiatus from music before branching out on his own and picking up the acoustic guitar. He focused on arrangement and technique and developed a catalog of over 200 covers. After a spell gigging those tunes, he decided to take the plunge into creating his own songs, for the first time as the principal songwriter and vocalist.
By mixing raw acoustic elements and moody electronic instrumentation, Schmidt has built a sound that weaves between folk and layered pop, with a concentration on sentimental lyrics and an impressive vocal range. Imagine a line connecting Mumford and Sons to Young the Giant and Schmidt’s work would be peppered along the way. “I started off as a picky rock snob but over the years have grown to love everything from Zac Brown Band to Jon Bellion, so those influences are reflected in my writing,” states Schmidt.
That variety of style and craftsmanship provides an engaging listening experience as any song could start off ballad-like but end in a sonic blaze of glory. Expect new music from Schmidt in early 2022.
