Bournemouth's Self Abuse formed in January 1982 . Andy Nazer (vocals/bass), Dave Brown (guitar/vocals) Jarvis Smale (guitar) and Steve Ridgeway (drums).
Together for three years they released two demos ‘State of Mind’ and 'Teenage' and one 7”
'Soldier’ on the 'Radical Change Records' label. Played by John Peel the record got to number two in the Independent charts. Two tracks from a third demo were featured later that year on ‘Party Pooping Punk Provocations’ compilation by Xcentric Noise Records but the cracks were beginning to show. The band split at the end of 1984.
The original line up reformed 20 years later in 2004 and released the ‘No Change’ 7”.
GTA rounded up all of the bands original demos and EP and released the 27 track ‘Soldier’ CD in 2006.
In 2007 Steve stepped down from the band and was replaced by Dom Webb. This new line up released the ‘Celebrity Death Squad’ 7” and 'Burn Trash City' 7”. In 2015 the 'Screenage' CD rounded up all of the recordings and out takes since their reformation. In 2017 Antitodo Records re-issued the 'Soldier' EP 7” on clear vinyl.
Still active in 2019, Mike Kelly of The Mission recorded and produced the 'Blowing a Fuse' EP on 10” blue vinyl and CD. A special gig was played to a packed crowd at Square Records in Wimborne to promote its release in September. Mad Butcher Records have just released a 12” vinyl compilation 'Unestablished since 1982' which features a selection of 16 songs spanning the bands career from 1982 to 2018.
