After being fans of each other's music for a while, Christophe Brabanders (BE) and Mick van het Nederend (NL) decided to quietly start a project together. The idea was to do away with the upcoming prevalence of chorus effects and sample pads, and to go back to a more old school set up. The joining of Bo Meskers (NL) and Willem Oostendorp (NL) then signalled the start of what is now called Severin Bells, and after about three years of playing together the band released their first album A Brighter Side to the Unknown on October 24th, 2020. The band's guitar based songs, sometimes cruisy and stretched out, sometimes more tightly knit and upbeat, are well-structured compositions where every layer or instrument has a clear function. Praised for both their studio work as well as their live performances, Severin Bells' traditional take on indie music holds its own surprisingly well in modern times.
