Alexandria Maniak, Alex, Shortly, whatever you want to call me, really.

————

The project came together in an instant. Armed with her own songs and a ringing set of chords, Alex Maniak reintroduced herself in a Michigan backyard with the moniker Shortly that has since repeated while sharing the stage with artists from Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties to Phoebe Bridgers, Bad Bad Hats and more. The Michigan multi-instrumentalist has also found a space for herself featuring and performing on a variety of artists’ songs, from indie pop artists like Chloe Moriondo to pop punk legends The Wonder Years.

Audiences and listeners alike dove headfirst into 2018’s Richmond EP, a cavernous and penitent lens into Maniak’s wars between self and faith, humanity and something more. Shortly later arrived with their 2021 debut album, Dancer, which takes the rejection and confusion of previous material and transforms it into something freeing and exultant, reconciling Maniak’s past and present with one swift maneuver.

Describing herself as a “song first” musician, Maniak explores genres and influences almost methodically, focusing on the community aspect of songwriting and showgoing before anything else. After a lengthy medically induced hiatus, one which brought clarity, a new chapter for a new Shortly is finally beginning in 2025.
