With every verse, Queens-based rapper SNICK Foley makes a strong case for the age-old idiom, "there must be something in the water.” Though drenched in Hip-Hop from his genesis, the NYC wordsmith got his start penning remixes in middle school and freestyling circles around his peers in his adolescence.
Influenced by the likes of MF DOOM, DMX, Phife, Ghostface, and Em, it’s evident that SNICK is a scholar of the game. Strapped with poetic meters and tight production, Foley flexes his ability to glide on everything from gutter, menacing beats, down to lo-fi jazz imbued joints.
SNICK is the kind of rap technician that doesn’t shy away from the full range of human emotion on the track. He averts the trends, while doubling down on what’s authentic. It feels ironic that his signature style would be anchored by his own versatility and apparent reverence for clever word play. While he skates on syllables and plays on double meanings, he remains deep in introspection.
Foley is very much tapped into the fact that his voice is an instrument. He’s got the kind of grasp on cadence that’s impressive, creating a synergy between the rhythm of his bar-work and the
rhythm of the very beats he hops on. He frequently shifts inflections, making his songs feel textured, and he bodies vulnerability, emptying the clip through a pretty dynamic vocal delivery. There’s nothing monotone or boring about a SNICK verse.
