Socalhoun is the alias of producer, singer/songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Jordan Calhoun. Born in Los Angeles, raised in San Diego, and now living in Los Angeles once again, SoCal and its sound are felt throughout his music, as are an eclectic mix of influences from the Motown artists he grew up listening and dancing to in his family’s living room, hip-hop, and emo/punk bands and the local skateboard scene for which they were the soundtrack.
The foundation for what would become Socalhoun began when Jordan attended UCLA intending to run track but eventually left the team to focus on music and a new band No Insurance. Many aspects of No Insurance’s sound can be found in Socalhoun’s music. A favorite of the campus music scene, No Insurance stood out for their blend of hip-hop and punk music and was a prime creative outlet for Jordan to explore his wide-ranging musical interests. The band disbanded upon graduation, which is when Jordan became seriously invested in DJing and producing, and thus Socalhoun was born.
Jordan is currently working on his first solo EP and listeners can expect a mix of hip-hop, dance, and punk, that blend of The Chronic, Discovery, and Enema of the State, he’s pursued from the start.
His debut recent release, “Saved Me” ft Lenka Shockley, combines melodious, emo-influenced production, chilled and wistful vocals, and dance beats with lyrics about love’s simple joys that are at once deeply personal and entirely universal.
