While roommates in Brooklyn, Tara Chacon and Tyler McCauley both experienced emotional breakups. They channeled their lovesick energy into music, crafting dark electronic dance-pop as Soft Lit. Their debut single, "Ocean King" b/w "Lately," was released in 2014 and featured Chacon's pleading vocals over electronic blips and droning synths. After signing with New York electro-indie Godmode, they recorded their debut self-titled EP. Released in 2015, the four-song collection contained an array of beat-driven styles, like the sensual slow jam "Blank Wall," the skittering "Synesthesiac," and the catchy lead single "I Can't Help It." That year, they went on tour with labelmate Shamir, whose debut LP, Ratchet, featured production by the duo. In early 2016, they released the bold single "U Up," an exhilarating change of pace that sounded like a lost radio pop single from the Knife's Silent Shout. ~ Neil Z.
