Sona Diabate comes from an extensive family of hereditary griot musicians from Guinea that includes many of the biggest names in traditional West African music. She is a particularly gifted singer who, as part of her occupation, must memorize vast amounts of oral history and compose "praise songs" to important figures and benefactors.
