Composer Sophia Winton is a classically trained singer, violinist and composer. She has studied under Madame Virginia Zeani Rossi-Lemeni, rival to Maria Callas and with Dame Malvina Major; trained with Opera NZ and performed for English National Opera as a developing artist. She studied violin and composition at Victoria and Waikato Universities.
She aims to popularise the beauty of the operatic voice and bring tuneful new classical-ish music into the world. Classical crossover is her genre of choice for many reasons but above all because it utilises the operatic voice, because it can employ a vast limitless palate of instruments and possibilities, and because it feels progressive.
In 2020 Sophia became suddenly sick and disabled by Neurological illness and took time away from music recovering and adapting to a new life. In 2023 she will release her first music since falling ill.
