Space Queen is from Amsterdam… or so she says… or maybe he?
Space Queen is a fictitious name for a mysterious artist, wrapped in a cloud of intrigue. All we know is they are one person with a computer, dusty samples and plenty of weed.
Space Queen’s sound is an audible anachronism, pulling from the past 100 years of musical genres. One song is guided by jazz-era snare drums, 80s synth pops up on another, then new millenia reggae makes a surprise appearance...yet despite the variety of samples, the overall sound has a very of-this-moment underwater lofi vibe.
The most intriguing part though is the dirty, crackling distortion that makes it feel like it comes from an old record player. Similar to partaking in the artist’s namesake strand of weed, the music invokes feelings of delightful disorientation that are not at all unpleasant.
