Staples Jr. Singers

Back in 1975, when the Staples Jr. Singers were teenagers growing up in the small town of Aberdeen, Mississippi, they got to make one stone-cold soul record together—which, because of its rarity, became coveted by gospel soul collectors: When Do We Get Paid. They paid for the record themselves and sold copies on their front lawn.

Following the re-issue of When Do We Get Paid (Luaka Bop, 2022), the Staples Jrs. finally had their time in the sun: The Guardian called it “Powerful” and The Boston Globe named it #7 Best Album of the Year.

The Staples Jrs. (no relation) are the Browns, who came of age in the ’60s when the South was desegregated on paper but not always in practice. The family took refuge from an unwelcoming town (and nation) in their music. Every weekend, they would travel to nearby programs, where excited audiences would flock to them: “Y’all sound like the Staple Singers, y’all should call yourselves the little Staple Jr. Singers!” So they did.

Now, 50 years since their début, the Staples Jrs. are back with SEARCHING (2024). Here, the original members Edward, R.C., and Annie, are joined by the next generation: Edward’s son Troy, R.C.’s son Gary, and R.C.’s grandson Jaylin.

In the last year, the Staples have concluded four successful tours of Europe, including celebrated appearances at Le Guess Who?, North Sea Jazz, and WOMAD UK, among many others. This July, they’ll be back on the road in France, the UK, Germany, and Roskilde. Catch them while you can.
