My new Christmas song was inspired, in part, by a visit to the Hermitage of Greccio Sanctuary on a recent walk from Assisi to Rome. According to the stories associated with St. Francis, he created the first nativity scene in a cave at this site on Christmas Eve in 1223. The scene, to help teach local villagers the Christmas story, included people and live animals. A chapel on the site has displays of nativity scenes from around the world.
