British singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Sterling Roswell (occasionally known as Rosco) first came to prominence as the drummer for legendary shoegaze/space rock pioneers Spacemen 3. A native of Rugby in the West Midlands, Roswell was only 18 when he joined the already established group and stayed with them until 1989 when he and former Spacemen 3 bassist Pete Bain formed a new group called the Darkside. Roswell initially acted as drummer for the Darkside, but soon switched to keyboards and eventually guitar, gradually taking on a bigger role in group's neo-psychedelic sound. After three albums for Beggars Banquet and a handful of EPs and singles, the group disbanded in 1993. Throughout the following decade, Roswell was a bit of a journeyman, eventually settling in Rome, where he worked as a television host, actor, and DJ. His return to recording was initiated by Barney Stoppard (son of playwright Tom Stoppard), who recruited him to compose music for a sci-fi film he was involved with. While the film never materialized, Roswell continued to experiment in his studio, recording the atmospheric, psyched-out music that would eventually become his first solo release, 2004's The Psychedelic Ubik. After relocating to London, he became active as a producer and engineer, working on records by Sky Saxon and Geraint Watkins, and even assisting on Nick Lowe's At My Age album. In 2011, he issued the single "Interplanetary Spaceliner" on his own ROSCOM label, with another single following in 2012, both of which would show up on his second solo LP, 2014's Call of the Cosmos. ~ Timothy Monger, Rovi
