Steve Waltner, born in 1940 in Wichita, KS, caught the music bug while taking piano lessons at age 6. In 1960, Waltner studied music for a spell at the then-University of Wichita. But Waltner’s dreams of making him big quickly drew him away from the classroom and toward sunny L.A. Walter made a living as a recording artist and songwriter before founding Corby Records with Denis Hardesty and Doug Cox, releasing an eclectic collection of music from pop to folk to garage rock. Waltner left Corby in 1970, and thereafter founded the Sunbird, Daisy, Utopia, Calico, and Early Bird Music record labels. He has also worked as an arranger, producer, publisher, and studio owner. Waltner stepped away from the music industry in 1985 and shifted his focus to video production, but with the dawn of the digital age came a renewed interest in recording.
