When Stevie sings, she’s letting you in on a secret; you’re there with her in her mind, and nothing is untouchable.
South London raised Stevie, previously known as MYTBE, releases her debut EP BABYFACE under casa nueve. The record marks a renaissance for the artist. ‘My previous work was very coy, I hid behind metaphors.’ Stevie admits. ‘But with my new music there’s a playfulness, and a shamelessness. I want to say things plainly. It’s flirty and self-assured.’ Co-written with Uma and Luke Bower, aka SALPA, BABYFACE boasts a new found confidence in the young artist's arsenal. With contributions from Alex Dibell and Gabrielle Borrajo of Under The Apricot Tree, mixed by Hugo M. Hardy, and mastered by Kevin Tuffy.
Her early influences range from jazz and soul icons like Nina Simone and Chet Baker, to taking inspiration from contemporary artists such as Nick Hakim, Lianne La Havas, Alice Phoebe Lou, Olivia Dean, Clairo, and Eliza. ‘Nick Hakim was a lightbulb moment, hearing his music for the first time made me realise that was the kind of sound I wanted to create.’ BABYFACE strikes that balance between vulnerability and empowerment, humour and intimacy. ‘I’m inspired by my own mind, by humour, by wordplay, and by not taking myself too seriously – apart from when I’m writing a ballad, then I get deep.’
