Substitute Dukes was a music project germinated by Matt Johnson, Will Holland, and Peter Grayson. The Dukes recorded an eponymous album at Chillhouse Studios in Charlestown, MA. This album was recorded late Sunday evenings over a two year period after all their respective children had gone to bed. The album features a number of guest musicians from the Boston area, including Stephen Blackmore who eventually went on to play drums on the second Dukes album, In the Beginning. After the untimely death of Matt Johnson, the Dukes released a three-song EP comprised of previously unreleased material titled The Happier Side.
