Supersport!’s latest offering; “stærsta hugmyndin” (eng: “the biggest idea”), deals with the pains and liberations of heartbreak. The song was conceived in manic flash this February and recorded almost immediately by producer Árni Árnason of The Vaccines, a longstanding friend and collaborator of the band. The result is an honest, if slightly raw, delivery of a message that feels urgent: “lend me tears // lend me four and a half years”.
This is Supersport!’s first new piece of music since their Reykjavík Grapevine & Iceland Music Awards Rock Album of the Year winning album “allt sem hefur gerst” (eng: “everything that has happened”) was released late last year. It is a welcomed departure from the sound established on that record, yet it maintains the essence of the band: a choppy rhythmic drive, bright and playful guitars, and harmony: a characteristically warm, quirky vocal delivery.
A distinctive quality of Supersport!’s practice as one of the leading indie acts of the blossoming Reykjavík grassroots scene in recent years, has been their obsessive emphasis on extensive collaboration, notably through the acclaimed Post-dreifing collective. On “stærsta hugmyndin” this manifests in a surprising but enriching contribution from Spacestation's frontman Björgúlfur Jes, in his debut solo outing as Straff. His intense backing vocals and soft guitar hooks offer an unexpectedly natural elaboration to the song’s emotional palette.
