With a pioneering portfolio of published cross-genre compositions for solo piano to her name, Dr Tanya Ekanayaka is an internationally acclaimed and award winning Sri Lankan-British virtuoso composer-pianist and scholar and one of the world's most prolific female composer-pianists.
She is also the first Sri Lankan composer in history to have entire albums of original music released worldwide by international record labels.
Composing exclusively for solo piano and of recent years performing only her own works, she is classically trained with a background in Asian and World music as well as being a record producer.
Published as recordings, her works have not been scored in any form and with the exception of her most recent 'extempore compositions', reside naturally and precisely frozen in her memory once evolved.
She began studying the piano when she was five years old, made her début public recital appearance at the age of twelve and has since performed in leading international recital venues in Europe, North America and Asia.
Consistent with her interdisciplinary background, she holds a doctorate for interdisciplinary research combining Linguistics and Musicology from The University of Edinburgh as well as advanced academic and professional qualifications in Music Performance, Linguistics and Literature.
