Tawobi, born Taylor Thompkins, is a Philadelphia artist blending rap, punk, and comedy. After a brief stay at St. John's University, he returned to Philly in 2015 to pursue music. His sound, influenced by artists like Outkast, E40, Fiona Apple, and Marilyn Manson, is known for its experimental edge. He gained momentum in 2022 after appearing on the Kill Tony podcast and later joined the West Philly punk scene as the frontman of Violent Highs. His 2023 album Black Saturday was well-received, including a feature in Bandcamp’s "New & Notable."
In 2024, Tawobi faced personal and professional struggles, including job loss and financial hardship. However, he made a strong comeback with the single Who Cares?, showcasing his growth as an artist with a raw, honest approach to themes like gentrification, addiction, and societal disillusionment.
In 2025, Tawobi plans to release a series of singles leading to his highly anticipated album WYGDAI ("What’re You Going To Do About It?"). The album blends hip-hop, punk, metal, and alternative R&B, drawing influences from albums like The Chronic, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), and Antichrist Superstar. Featuring local and underground artists such as Mother Maryrose, April Fool Child, SHID, and Johnny Polygon, WYGDAI is set to showcase Tawobi’s genre-blending style and artistic evolution. In-between his singles and album he will release a 13-track project 'Rosemary’s Baby', continuing his journey of creative exploration and authenticity.
