Te Kuru o te Marama Dewes is of the Ngāti Rangitihi and Ngāti Porou tribes, tangata whenua (native) to Aotearoa (New Zealand). Te Kuru o te Marama composes music to support the revitalisation and normalisation of his native tongue, Te Reo Māori. The Māori language, along with Māori people and their environment, is being regenerated after 180 years of violent colonisation, intentional annexation and ongoing oppression from the colonial Government. Te Kuru o te Marama creates music to uplift and empower Māori to bring their rich woven tapestries of cultural tradition to life, while inviting all people to experience a Māori worldview through contemporary music.
