Text Chunk is the recording project from Edmonton-based experimental artist & Kudatah-label founder, Brandon Smith. Smith’s burgeoning discography contorts all manners of left-field dance, juke, ambient & other innovative sounds into a freakish and hypnotic collection of club cuts and bleeding-edge electronic compositions.
In a seminal moment that would determine his next decade of creative output, he found demos from <a href="spotify:artist:1v5NIQluNtqkuVcneht0d4" data-name="Sven K">Sven K</a> online and reached out; at this point they quickly realized they were neighbors, rare appreciators of leftfield music both based in Edmonton. They'd launch a label, Kudatah, with friends that would serve as an outlet for their creativity while establishing important inroads with influential genre-agnostic producers globally. His debut, 2018's <a href="spotify:album:7nTPyCbAQRLaU3HavwEYZF" data-name="No Fun">No Fun</a>, kicks off with "Liquid," marries the lonely corporate ambience of vaporwave with intricate, IDM-indebted drum programming and "Counterintuitive," fuses widescreen Detroit-style pads with gabber rhythms. On other releases and collaborative cuts with <a href="spotify:artist:04EWsT1IXNQUyBIY5yChQq" data-name="Hood Joplin">Hood Joplin</a> & <a href="spotify:artist:1v5NIQluNtqkuVcneht0d4" data-name="Sven K">Sven K</a>, Smith demonstrates this push-and-pull—between high-tempo, intricate percussion and sweeping elegance—that distinguishes the Text Chunk discography. In 2020, <a href="spotify:artist:1v5NIQluNtqkuVcneht0d4" data-name="Sven K">Sven K</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:2qwi0hBvI2GrbkurOnw3hZ" data-name="Skee Mask">Skee Mask</a>, and <a href="spotify:artist:1rK3Yx8fDn4uaECVlehOqf" data-name="Text Chunk">Text Chunk</a> collaborated on a track for the third Kudatah compilation, recorded at the Ilian Tape mainstay's studio in Munich. Smith is currently preparing a series of new EPs set to release on various labels such as Evar Records, Infinite Drift, and Moveltraxx.
